As We See It: Alejo, Monning for Assembly
Watsonville City Councilman and current Mayor Luis Alejo is heavily favored to be elected in the 28th Assembly District, which includes parts of the Pajaro Valley and Watsonville, and southern Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey counties. Alejo, a Democrat, has a significant advantage in party registration and a huge margin in campaign fundraising over Republican challenger Robert Bernosky, a Hollister businessman. Alejo has risen from humble circumstances to become a law graduate of UC Davis with a master's of education from Harvard University. He currently works as a staff attorney with Monterey County Superior Court. While Alejo can sometimes be a polarizing figure -- he recently had to back down after he tried to get Watsonville's Civic Plaza renamed for United Farm Workers co-founder Dolores Huerta -- his unique experiences should help him work toward solutions for the issues he seems to care most deeply about: job training for disadvantaged kids, education and reviving the local economy. We recommend his election.
