Watsonville City Councilman and current Mayor Luis Alejo is heavily favored to be elected in the 28th Assembly District, which includes parts of the Pajaro Valley and Watsonville, and southern Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey counties. Alejo, a Democrat, has a significant advantage in party registration and a huge margin in campaign fundraising over Republican challenger Robert Bernosky, a Hollister businessman. Alejo has risen from humble circumstances to become a law graduate of UC Davis with a master's of education from Harvard University. He currently works as a staff attorney with Monterey County Superior Court.

Dem Assembly candidates show financial muscle: Bill Monning, Luis Alejo report more than $300,000 each in campaign contributions

Watsonville Mayor Luis Alejo's total for the year is close to Monning's after contributions of more than $30,000 this month, his reports said. His support came from both unions and business interests, as well as from the California League of Conservation Voters, which chipped in $3,900.

"Current District 28 Assemblymember Anna Caballero is running for state senate, and the candidates looking to replace her are Watsonville mayor Luis Alejo and businessman Robert Bernosky. A self-made startup expert, Bernosky offers a financial focus but relies on the old Republican formula of shrinking state government-a potential disaster in a state that already suffers from one of the lowest ratios of state workers per resident. Alejo, by contrast, wants a state more involved in job creation, health care, green tech, gang intervention and education. We find Luis Alejo to be the better choice for the Assembly seat."

The young Watsonville mayor’s assets were impressive enough to knock out seasoned Dem opponent Janet Barnes—who’s now bidding to keep her Salinas City Council seat—in the June primary.
We like not only Alejo’s ...intelligence and energy, but also his blue-collar roots (his parents were migrant farm workers), his time in the trenches (teaching at-risk high school students) and his legal experience (as a staff attorney for Monterey County Superior Court and California Rural Legal Assistance).
In a historically Democratic and largely Latino district, Alejo is well positioned to trounce Republican opponent Robert Bernosky and succeed Anna Caballero. We’re confident Alejo will be a strong, progressive voice para la gente in Sacramento.

Mayor honored by college group

The Community College League of California is honoring Mayor Luis Alejo with a 2010 Distinguished Alumni Award.
The award recognizes people whose attendance at a community college helped them achieve educational and professional goals and who have served their communities.
Alejo graduated from Gavilan College in Gilroy in 1984. He completed his undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, received a law degree from UC Davis and earned a master's degree in education from Harvard.
He has served on the City Council since 2008, and is running for the 28th Assembly District seat. He is a staff attorney for Monterey County Superior Court.

Luis Alejo adds to his list of endorsements for the 28th Assembly

Luis Alejo, Democratic candidate for the 28th Assembly district seat has added to his endorsements, according to a news release his issued Sunday.
U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, D-Carmel, and Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue are two more elected officials who have endorsed Alejo. They follow Assemblymember Anna Caballero, D-Salinas, and Alejo's challengers in the June primary, Salinas City Councilwoman Janet Barnes and Gilroyschool board member Francisco Dominguez.
